New York City, USA (Aug 24)

New York City is such a dynamic place!  This is our first stop on our world-wide virtual vacation school.  With so many potential destinations to explore, it is easy to get all of the subjects in for the week.  The trouble will be how to cram it all into just one week...

Here is my tentative plan:

Pack our "bag" (see the pretravel post for the paper suitcase)
Print out our ticket/stamp passport
Calculate the distance to travel from our local airport to NYC, find out how long it takes to fly vs drive
Find NYC on the map, discuss what direction we need to travel from our home
Take a few tourist photos with props
Watch some virtual tours from the major attractions
Watch a video about the subway system
Read some picture books
Have a few of movie nights with movies like Annie, An American Tail, and Enchanted
Watch one broadway show
Build some lego skyscrapers and bridges while talking about architecture unique to NYC
Eat some home versions of NYC food
Explore information about various famous destinations
Have a brief discussion about 9/11 and the upcoming holiday
Have a discussion about money and the importance of the stock market to our country
Go over immigration and Ellis Island, if there's time look up ancestors that came to America in that time period
Color/draw pictures of the Statue of Liberty
Write a brief summary of favorite things learned this week, do free drawing to illustrate

Below are some awesome resources to get you started!  Be sure to check your local library for additional books and videos.
